Gamification – and, no, it’s not about getting hot legs

The last year or so I’ve been working on this video game project - developing a backstory and working out the concept. It’s called ButterflyEra 9 and it’s essentially a game of social and ecological sustainability - a game of survival, frankly. It’s got some pretty progressive aspects and I’m excited about it. My lead designer got a promotion with his day job at a swanky gaming company with big $ & had to bow out so I’m starting over to assemble a team of designers.

Meanwhile, I’m slowly writing it as a novel to better develop the concept and the aesthetic. You can read more about the concept at my page over at The New Hive.

If you’re a designer and are interested in discussing collaboration with me, let’s arrange a discussion. hassen(at)hhassen(dot)com .

Latest Chapbook is Finally Finished

My goal for our Black Sheep Collective event a couple weeks ago was to finish the third part in my Sky Journal Trio. The first was sky journal – from land, the second was sky journal – from sea, and this is, of course, sky journal – from sky. I’ve been writing these for over ten years, a  journal of sorts, mostly about transformation. Some were written at (or on) the sea, some during air travel and the rest in my daily whatnots. Pages of each book correspond to the other two companion books.

The first two I’d self-published back in 2003 and 2004 and, after a period of focusing on my small business, I’ve recently been able to re-focus and wrap up the final piece.

Since I was out of the first run of the first two chaps, I decided to re-print those as well as - from sky. For the covers, I hand-printed each differently with water-based oils. Here are some pictures:

I’m happy to send you one or all if you’ll kindly donate to help pay for the printing costs. $10 for each would be greatly appreciated plus a couple bucks for postage. Here’s my paypal button but please be sure to email me at hassen[at]hhassen[dot]com to give me details of which book(s) you want and where to address the package.

*Along with the texts, I’ve taken numerous sky photos that I’d like to do something with, whether it’s self-publishing a companion photo book, an electronic version(s) or seeking traditional publishing. If you’ve a press and would be interested in discussing the latter, let’s!

most current

i’m sometimes asked about which creative projects i’m working on and i never seem to have a quick answer. at the moment, i’m trying to wrap up a few that have been in the works for years.

one is ‘sky journal – from sky’,  the third in a chapbook triptych, ‘sky journals’, the first of which i self-published back in 2003. i actually finished the writing but it’s been waiting for me to properly format and arrange, as the pages in each book correspond to pages in the other two books. it’s growing weary of my daily drudgery (aren’t we all) and accuses me of abandonment, which is not the case, i wink you deserve right timing.

another project has had me on fire for the last seven years and it’s definitely something that requires time & incremental mulling. it’s called BRUT and is an exploration of a [possible] serial killer contending with his compulsions in a dissociative culture. artist & astrologer Heather Saker, my wife, has been collaborating with me on this project now for a couple of years with paintings and video. it’s fun to perform when i get the opportunity.

i almost forgot to mention ‘crabapples’, a project that i’ve been working on since 2004, the first handful of which were published in Furniture Press‘ PO25¢EM series with the Philly Sound. for years, i’d get these little lines of poetry in my head with a title and began writing them down. since the first mini-chap, i’ve added one every so often & i’m sure i have well over 100 now. Most of them can be seen at my crabapple website (formerly known as ‘oh, nothing, really’) accompanied by some of my photographs. they feel like they’re about petering out so i may try to publish them at some point before long.

SO, after dedicating the last five years mostly to entrepreneurship and activism, i’m returning in 2011 to focus again on my creative life. i’m hoping to wrap these projects up this year so i can start a couple more that i’ve been meaning to get to for a decade or so. i’m very excited to come home again…
